About the Exhibition: “Momentum” is part of WCA's Momentum: 40 Years of WCA Conference that takes place from February 22-25, 2012 in Los Angeles. The Women’s Caucus for Art Conference is held in conjunction with the College Art Association (CAA) Conference. WCA is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization and an affiliate society of CAA.

A Juried Exhibition of Art by Women
Sponsored by the Koehnline Museum of Art and theWomen’s and Gender Studies Program at Oakton Community College.
This year’s annual collaboration between theWomen’s and Gender Studies Program and the Koehnline Museum challenges presenters to engage with and respond to the work of an influential woman artist. Oakton Community College invites women artists of all media to submit a single work that honors, critiques, or expands upon the techniques and/or content of a groundbreaking female “master” of either the past or the present.

When: The exhibit runs October 6 - 28, 2011. A public reception will be held Thursday, October 6, from 5 to 8 p.m. Artists are encouraged to attend this special event and discuss their work with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
Who: Artists who self-identify as women are invited to submit one work for consideration. Submissions must be from professional artists 18 years of age or older.
Jury/Entry Fee: No entry fee.
Catalog: A catalog of the exhibition will be produced.
Submission of Work: Each artist may submit one original work for consideration.Work should relate to the theme of
“call and response.”
DEADLINE AND GUIDELINES:
Submissions must arrive at the Koehnline Museum of Art by August 26, 2011.
Submission on CD only. Image should be a JPEG (.jpg) of at least 300 dpi. The CD should be labeled with the artist’s name, title of work, date, and medium. In addition, the CD also should contain a single MicrosoftWord document with artist biography (maximum 300 words, narrative form—no résumés) and a brief statement about the submitted work including information about the connection to the selected artist and, if applicable, the specific artwork referenced.
Also complete the attached form and return it with your CD. If you would like your CD returned, include SASE.
Media: All media considered. Performance works will be considered if appropriate to the space. Installations and work that the artist determines to be delicate must be installed and removed by the artist. The Museum manager will determine if works should be installed and removed by the artist.
Size Limitations: None.
Insurance: All work will be insured while in the Museum.
Delivery of AcceptedWork: All work must arrive at the Museum by 5 p.m., Monday, September 26, 2011.
Pickup ofWork: Monday, October 31, 2011, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., or by appointment. If the indicated times for delivery or pickup are not convenient for you, contact Nathan Harpaz, manager of the Koehnline Museum of Art, 847-635-2633, to arrange a more convenient time and date.

Our Juror Cathy Breslaw

Born in Coral Gables, Florida and raised in Baltimore Maryland, Cathy Breslaw received a BA degree in American Studies from George Washington University in Washington D.C., an MSW (Masters of Social Work) from Howard University in Washington, D.C. and an MFA from Claremont Graduate University in Claremont California.

She currently lives and works in Southern California. Breslaw is a contemporary visual artist who has had a series of solo and group exhibitions across the United States in museums, commercial galleries, art centers, college and university galleries and alternative spaces. Her work is a combination of drawings, wall, floor and installation pieces made primarily from industrial mesh but also includes mixed media of other types.

State of the Union Adress

President Barack Obama delivered his annual State of the Union speech before the United States Congress where he addressed three areas of concern that resonate with arts advocates:

federal spending, jobs and education policy.

Earlier this week, 165 conservative members of Congress representing the Republican Study Committee called for termination of the National Endowment for the Arts and key arts education programs at the U.S. Department of Education. We know that the battle to protect these programs will be tough this year, but with your help, not insurmountable.

Several major newspapers across the country interviewed Americans for the Arts President and CEO Bob Lynch in response to the dubious notion that cutting the arts will actually reduce the nation’s deficit.

In today’s New York Times, Bob pointed out that the arts support 5.7 million jobs in the United States that generate about $30 billion in taxes, nearly $13 billion of which goes to the federal government and said, "If they’re serious about jobs and they’re serious about income, they would invest more in the arts.”

Since 1965, the National Endowment for the Arts has been serving arts organizations and artists in every state and every community. The arts not only play an important role in our nation’s well-being and foster creativity and innovation, but they also create jobs and prepare our workforce to compete in the global economy. Including the arts in a comprehensive and formal education for every student is critical.

The education reforms that the President and leaders in Congress should be looking at are ones that strengthen the role of the arts and truly implement it as a core academic subject in schools throughout the country.

"Hidden Cities" - No matter our place in society, we all have our Hidden City , a place of refuge from gender, race, class and sexual exclusions, a place that shapes the feminist viewpoint. Some cities, like wrapped boxes, conceal unexpected gifts, others are riddles and lyrical abstractions. These are performative spaces where we may imagine retribution for injustices, righting wrongs or conversely, delving into the dark side. Artists are invited to explore their idea of their Hidden City, real or imagined, in an array of media. The theme may be broadly interpreted from an activist, political or personal context. Convince the viewer of its viability, a live space filled with passion and imagination.

ABOUT THE JUROR: Lisa Phillips, Director of the New Museum, NYC

Lisa Phillips
was appointed Director of the New Museum in December 1998, and arrived in April 1999. She is the second person to occupy that post in the museum's 30 year history. Since it's founding in 1977, the New Museum has had a unique role in the New York art world as a leading destination for new art and new ideas and is Manhattan 's only dedicated contemporary art museum. She lectures on contemporary art at museums throughout the world and has served as a Visiting Critic at Yale University and as a panelist and juror for the National Endowment for the Arts, New York City Public Art Commission, and the Fulbright Fellowship Review Committee.
Under Ms. Phillips direction, it is respected internationally for the adventurousness and global scope of its curatorial program. In 2003, with the Board, she initiated a major capital campaign to fund a new building project that resulted in a 60,000 square foot new world class cultural destination which opened in 2007 designed by the cutting edge firm, SANAA. In late 2007, the New Museum opened on the Bowery, having raised over $64 million and having established an endowment for the first time in the Museum's history. She has more than doubled the New Museum's income and membership; increased profile and visibility through higher quality programming, rebranding, and marketing initiatives; expanded Board from fifteen to thirty-eight members; developed long term partnerships with corporations like Target, Altoids, and Bloomberg LP; dramatically expanded education and youth programs; and took on Rhizome, a new media organization as an affiliate.
Prior to joining the New Museum , Phillips, was a curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art. She organized such landmark exhibitions as "The American Century Part II: Art and Culture" (1999), "Beat Culture and the New America: 1950-1965" (1995), "Frederick Kiesler" (1989), and "Image World: Art and Media Culture" (1989). She presided over mid-career surveys of Richard Prince (1992), Terry Winters (1992), and Cindy Sherman (1987), in addition to overseeing the 1997 Biennial Exhibition and serving on the curatorial team for each Biennial between 1985 and 1993.
SELECTION OF WORK
The juror will select works that will be on display at New Century Artists Gallery (NCAG) on 530 W 25 Street, New York, NY. These works will also be in the exhibition catalog. Additionally, the juror will select works that will be in the catalog only. This allows for more works to be seen beyond the physical limitation of the gallery.
ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
'Hidden Cities' is part of WCA's LIVE SPACE: WOMEN + ART+ ACTIVISM Conference that takes place from February 10-14, 2010 in New York City during the College Art Association (CAA) Conference. WCA is an affiliate society of CAA.

There will be a $20 hanging/publicity fee for all artists accepted into the show.
Mandatory Specifications and Guidelines for the On-line Submissions:
Provide an artist statement about each specific work(s) you are submitting and its relevance to the concept of "Hidden Cities". Description is limited to 530 characters.
Name your JPG files = Artist's last name + Title. Example Smith_funhouse2
All images must be submitted in RGB color mode. You will not be able to upload images in CMYK.
Submit JPG images sized approximately 4" x 6" at 300 dpi resolution. In order to upload successfully, images must be at least 1200 pixels wide. The maximum uploadable file size is 8 megabytes. High resolution images are requested for print publicity of accepted works.
Provide dimensions of each piece as follows: Height x Width x Depth. Indicate whether inches or feet.
Do not use double quotation marks, colons or semi-colons. You may use ingle quotation marks if you need to use quotation marks.
Once you make payment via Paypal, you cannot change your information or replace the image you submitted. Make sure all your information is correct before clicking the Paypal button.
If you have three-dimensional work and would like to submit more than one view of that piece, you may either submit one image that combines multiple views or submit up to three different views of your work. Each view counts as a submission so remember to identify multiple views of an entry in your description of work.
Specifications:
Work must be available for duration of exhibit.
Artists must submit detailed descriptions of any wall-hung artworks with alternative hanging methods, showing in detail how these pieces will hang.
Size limit for 2-D work: 72" in any direction; weight limit: 50lbs.
3D work- Artwork can occupy no more than 6' of floor installation space. New Century Artists Gallery will install. The artist must install artwork requiring complex installation (to be determined by curator and gallery).
Video: Artist must supply ALL own equipment.
Wall-hung work must be suitably framed or in an alternative presentation form and ready to hang.
All framed artworks must be firmly wired for hanging - no clip frames or saw-tooth hangers. Work without an appropriate hanging apparatus will be disqualified.
Entries that do not comply with the rules will be disqualified.
Delivery/Shipping:
· Shipped work to New Century Artists Gallery (NCAG), 530 West 25th Street, New York, NY to arrive Tuesday, Jan. 25 to Friday, Jan 28 noon to 5 p.m. Mark box for shipper to deliver between 12-5 p.m.
· Must be sent in reusable packaging with no styrofoam packing peanuts.
· Work that does not arrive by Friday, January 28^th will not be included in exhibition.
All hand-delivered works should be delivered to NCAG on Friday Jan. 28 or Saturday Jan 29 from 11 to 6 p.m.
WCA & NCAG are not responsible for damage caused in transit.
Artists are responsible for arranging prepaid pickup with their preferred shipper on Monday, February 15, 2011 between noon and 5 p.m.
Mandatory to include prepaid shipping labels with your artwork.
Following the close of the exhibition, hand-delivered works should be picked up on Saturday, February 11^th from 5-6:00 p.m.
WCA and NCAG are not liable for artwork left beyond February 15, 2011 and all artwork left will become property of WCA .
Sales/Insurance
WCA will retain a 30% commission. Work remains the property of the artist until sold. Sold artworks shall remain in the exhibition until the last day of the show. All exhibited works need to be self insured by the artist. Sold works may be picked up on Saturday, February 12 from 5-6 p.m. Checks for sold works will be sent via mail to the artist postmarked by March 12^th, 2011.
Publicity:
The WCA or NCAG may use images of artwork accepted into the exhibition for publicity purposes.
One or more artworks may be chosen for the cover design of invitation for the exhibition. They will also be featured on www.nationalwca.org. Artists agree to allow reproduction of their digital files and/or photographs taken of their art for educational, publicity, and archival purposes.

This juried exhibition aims to explore the notion of “intimacy” as it affects art-making. How can feelings be represented in the formal expression of art? “Intimacy” can be about the sense of belonging-a sense that you are not alone in the world, that others are literate in your thoughts and feelings. “Intimacy” can be an attachment to a person

or thing that allows you to remain tethered to the world. This juried exhibition aims to explore how notions of intimacy can inform artistic practices and how art can portray the many aspects of intimacy, including, but not limited to, relationships between people, people and things, creator and object, individual and environment, private and public. We would like the entries to consider ideas of: scale, familiarity, proximity, closeness, tenderness, attachment, (inner or inmost nature), being knowledgeable about. While we welcome work that engages intimacy as subject matter, we are primarily interested in investigations of intimacy as a concept in art-making. Artists should examine not only the meanings of intimacy, but its expression in formal, social, social and political contexts.

Clatsop Community College presents our fifth annual international juried exhibition. Au Naturel: the Nude in the 21st Century, to be held February 17th – April 14th, 2011Au Naturel is an international juried competition open to all artists working in any two-dimensional drawing, painting, and printmaking media with a focus on the nude human figure as subject matter in any form ranging from representational to abstract, and in which the handmade mark is employed as the primary means of image-making. Entrants must be 18 years or older. Artwork created under the supervision of an instructor is not eligible. Submitted artwork must have been executed in the last three years and must be available for the duration of the exhibit. Any artwork reproduced by photomechanical processes (including giclée prints) will not be accepted. We are pleased to announce that the juror for the 2011 exhibit is Jane Beebe, owner and director of PDX Contemporary Art, one of Portland’s leading galleries showing art that, as Ms. Beebe describes, "has a slight conceptual edge. It is personal work which is both intellectually and visually satisfying."
Each individual is permitted a minimum of 3 images and a maximum of 15. The entry fee is $35 and $5 for every image over the minimum. The maximum dimensions are 6 ’x 10 ’and must not weigh more than 50 lbs. uncrated. All accepted artwork must be framed or otherwise professionally presented with wires or hanging devices (no saw-tooth hangers). Awards consist of $1000 in cash prizes, and up to $2000 in purchase awards. One artist will be chosen to be featured in a solo show for the following exhibition season, and a select number of Visiting Artist Workshop awards will also be granted.

Artists and jewelry artisans now have a direct path to collectors in key affluent markets aboard SeaFair: The Megayacht Venue. International Fine Art Expositions (IFAE) and SeaFair founders David and Lee Ann Lester have announced "Art on the Harbor", to allow face to face interactions between artists and collectors aboard the world's first mobile megayacht venue.

SeaFair provides a private interactive experience for artists and artisans with current and prospective clients," said David Lester. "Collectors can directly view contemporary art and jewelry in a luxurious shipboard environment, without leaving their local communities. This innovative program offers artists and artisans an upscale platform and direct channel to sell their works and meet new collectors."

Each fair is meticulously created by a board of art experts composed of gallery owners, museum professionals and experienced IFAE staff. San Diego Womens Caucus for Art is launching an on-line gallery and exhibition space.

In a refreshing departure from traditional gallery operations, artists will not have to play the who-knows-who, elitist game to be featured in this gallery. They will be selected for their talent. Our online art gallery will be dedicated to helping contemporary artists display their original art while making it easier for the public to find them. The public can use the online gallery to search or browse for original art, then contact the artists or their galleries. We simply highlight the artists and their art. We provide a way to find art, artists, and galleries and help artists promote their contemporary art.

The exhibition objective is to present a collection of work that uses organic, natural, sustainable. recycled materials, non-toxic materials or digital methods. Mollie Kellogg, local artist will be our juror. Mollie studied art in Colorado starting her career in graphic design and illustration. In 1992, she co-founded Planet Earth Multi-Cultural Theatre and Gallery in Phoenix, Arizona. In 2002, Mollie moved from Seattle, Washington to San Diego, California where she is working full-time as an artist. Mollie will be looking for art that incorporates natural processes; art that reinvents or reclaims natural found articles; and art that celebrates our emotional and physical connection to the earth. Ultimately, she seeks visually compelling creations that educate, enlighten, and inspire stewardship of the earth.

The concept of home resonates with personal truths, as well as social, political, and economic realities. Our individual identities are formed by where we come from, and where and how we live. Home can be a building, a person, a nation, or a memory. Homes can be lost, found, or abandoned. They can be cleaned, improved, or destroyed. Home can be a place of refuge—or a place of oppression. For this year’s juried exhibition, Oakton Community College invites women artists to submit a single work in any media that thoughtfully examines the theme, “No Place Like Home: Examining Changing Landscapes in Our Lives,” and how the concept of home shapes our individual and shared experiences.

Prospectus for “Reversing the Gaze”

Since the early years of Feminist Art, women artists have responded to their subjugation in art by male artists by using their own bodies as the subject matter in their work. We credit feminist art of the 1970’s with giving artists today the “permission to be personal”.
There is a difference in women’s art from the work of male counterparts. We see the nude woman from different angles. The feminist artist chooses a personal vantage point, apart from that seen in men’s portrayals of women. The thesis of woman as both surveyor and the surveyed continues.
“Men act and women appear. Men look at women. Women watch themselves being looked at. This determines not only most relations between men and women but also the relation of women to themselves. The surveyor of women in herself is male: the surveyed female…thus she turns herself into an object- and most particularly an object of vision: a sight”. Ways of Seeing, by John Berger
The goal of this exhibition “Man as Object: Reversing the Gaze” is to turn the tables and to exhibit works that put the male in the position of subject and spectacle. Not only will the male be taking on the female role, but the surveyor is now female, no longer a “masculine” part of the female, thus creating a truly Feminist stance. The male is the spectacle for a woman’s enjoyment or mere viewing.
This is effective in two ways: as the male viewer encounters the male nude, he is forced like many women before him to turn the mirror on himself and secondly to feel the powerlessness of being owned or submissive. The individualism of the artist, the thinker, the patron, the owner, and the woman is transformed. The person who is the object of their activities, the man, is treated as a thing or an abstraction. By reversing the unequal relationship between men and women that is so deeply embedded in our culture, men will do to themselves what they have done to women for centuries. They observe themselves and their own masculinity as women observe their own femininity.
This exhibition will explore women’s responses to a male dominated world in a different way than an exhibition of women’s images of themselves. It will mark an important development in Feminist Art which has long concentrated on images of women meant to challenge stereotypical notions of womanhood.
A gallery filled with works depicting men, created by women, comments on the prevalence of the male gaze in art and of the continued domination of male artists exhibiting in galleries and museums.

knit-a-thon -Sifu Design Studio & Fine Yarns is a creative hub where people meet and share Ideas!

I am in the process of opening a shop in Chicago, I want to create a hub of creative people, artists, crafters, fiber artists, and host a fund raiser for this space. I want to create a network of these artists to come and share ideas/collaborate on projects. Sifu Design Studio & Fine Yarns is a creative hub where people meet and share Ideas!

I want to have a kind of knit-a-thon where people pledge per inch of fabric knit or per hour knitting. The entire thing would be video taped, over time-lapse video. People would come with their scrap yarn see how long we can all knit for. There would also be a silent auction of pieces while the knit-a-thon is going on. This could be the type of event were we could have a life feed on my web site, and just like PBS, have people call in and donate to the cause. The cause of uniting fiber artists, getting knitting known as a not just a feminine craft but as a community building activity. Where people can stitch and bitch, and be strong, and where men can create things, and not be afraid that they are stereotypically "girly" for doing so. That knitting and the needle arts is an art form!!

I would like to do a performance piece where knitters or crocheters gather together in the WCA conference in February, where during the speeches/lectures people are knitting 3"x3" color squares that will be put together by myself as a giant afghan or quilt. But this image will be of a giant penis, or a giant vagina. Something having to do with gender identification. Knitting or hand needle work is considered a traditionally female craft and a homemakers job where you knit your kids a sweater, knit your hubby a scarf, knit yourself a teapot cozy. These things are well and good but i want to challenge the idea of a feminine craft with a juxtaposed image as strangely jarring as a penis. And since this is going to be put together over time it could be that people don't realize what it is until most of the image is done. I am hoping to video tape hundreds of knitters in New York knitting in public places (like the subway, busses, coffee shops, parks) and in the conference to knit these squares that would be put together and then displayed at the Ceres Gallery in the summer of 2011. The piece could be put together at the conference in February if we have enough knitters, or at the gallery in the summer. However the piecing together would be time-lapsed so you can see this process unfold in a few minuets.

The Feminist Art Project and the Institute for Women and Art would like to invite College Art Association members to submit proposals for panel, poster and open forum sessions for the CAA Conference 2011 in New York City. We encourage you to propose sessions that address the theme of: Feminism, Diversity and Globalism.  That theme is one of several selected by CAA for their Centennial celebration . It was originally proposed by a coalition of groups including ArtTable, The Feminist Art Project, and Women's Caucus for Art , along with several CAA committees. The Feminist Art Project will be presenting TFAP@CAA, an extraordinary day of feminist art panels and performances on Saturday, February 12 organized by Johanna Burton and Julia Bryan-Wilson.

Beginning June 26, individual CAA members may submit a session proposal for the centennial Annual Conference, taking place February 12, 2011, in New York. Proposals should cover the breadth of current thought and research in art, art and architectural history, theory and criticism, pedagogical issues, museum and curatorial practice, conservation, and developments in technology.

The Annual Conference Committee welcomes session proposals that include the work of established artists and scholars, along with that of younger scholars, emerging and mid-career artists, and graduate students. Particularly welcome are those sessions that highlight interdisciplinary work. Artists are especially encouraged to propose sessions appropriate to dialogue and information exchange relevant to artists.

"Somewhere between the mid-1990s and mid-2000s, art dealers in New York reinvented themselves and changed the title of their occupation to 'gallerist'," writes Caroll Michels in the 6th edition of HOW TO SURVIVE AND PROSPER AS AN ARTIST: Selling Yourself Without Selling Your Soul, published in 2009 by Henry Holt and Company. "The new title arrived with a set of rules regarding who can use the title and who cannot . . . Although the new title is pretentious and a less-than-subtle embellishment of the occupation of 'sales person,' it can also be interpreted that the 'ist' at the end of 'galler-ist' symbolically represents yet another encroachment into an 'art-ists's' territory. It can be compared to the 50 percent sales commissions art dealers receive, an implication that they are major contributors to the creation of artwork!"

Drawing on more than three decades of experience as a career coach and artist-advocate, Michels shares insights for navigating the complicated, often political, art world. In the chapter "Launching or Relaunching Your Career: Overcoming Career Blocks," she pinpoints specific danger zones for artists - including an unwillingness to confront money issues, an awe of New York and self-imposed "regionalism," the quest for external validation, and adolescent career goals.

Other chapters present advice and guidance on presentation tools, pricing work, art marketing and the Internet; public relations; exhibition and sales opportunities; dealing with art dealers; the mysterious world of grants; and handling rationalization, paranoia, competition, rejection, and the "overwhelm factor."

Caroll Michels is on the faculty of the Continuing Studies and Special Programs division of the Ringling College of Art and Design, in Sarasota, Florida. She will be a keynote speaker at "Sweet Rewards. 2010 Next Step Career Conference" on March 19 and 20, sponsored by the College.

She served as chairperson of the Fine Arts Advisory Board of the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. She was also on the faculty of the New School for Social Research. Her artwork has been exhibited in museums and cultural centers in the United States and abroad, including the Georges Pompidou Museum in Paris; the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis; and Exit Art and the Institute for Contemporary Art/The Clocktower in New York City. Michels has received numerous grants, including those awarded by the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council for the Arts; the New York Council for the Humanities; and the International Fund for the Promotion of Culture/UNESCO. She was a fellow at the Alden B. Dow Creativity Center, Northwood University, in Midland, Michigan. Gifts of Art - accepting proposals for September 2010 through August 2011 exhibit year

One of the first and most comprehensive arts-in-healthcare programs nationwide, Gifts of Art brings the world of art & music to the University of Michigan Health System.

Our nine galleries display 50 exhibits a year. They include 2-D and 3-D spaces that are viewed by approximately 10,000 people a day, or about 3.4 million people a year. This makes our galleries some of the most widely visited indoor, non-museum exhibit spaces in the state.

Entry Requirements
Selections will be made from either digital images on CDs or slides. Emailed JPEG images or in person submissions will not be considered. For both digital submissions and slides, artists must provide a minimum of 12 professional quality images. Group shows should provide a minimum of 24 images. Submitted images must reflect the proposed exhibit. Digital submission guidelines are available on the Gifts of Art website.

All submissions must include a completed Exhibit Proposal Form, a numbered reference sheet and a resume and/or biography.

Submissions must be received by May 14, 2010.

Selection Criteria
In selecting artwork, Gifts of Art's primary mission is to create a more comfortable and calming atmosphere within the often stressful environment of a hospital and to provide a positive distraction for our patients, visitors and staff. We take into consideration the medical and emotional sensitivities of our viewers. Overt sexual content, violence and nudity will not be considered. We will also avoid pieces that are confrontational, obviously depressing or contain negative medical connotations.

Submissions must be received by May 14, 2010.
Final notifications will be mailed by July 30, 2010.

The call is open for WCA national juried exhibition, Blue Planet. Eco-artists and artists who are concerned about the environment are encouraged to submit work for jurying. Noted eco-artist Kim Abeles will jury the show, which will be held at the Somarts Cultural Center Gallery in San Francisco as an important part of the WCA Pacific Region Conference, “ELEMENTS: An Eco-Art Conference.” This will be an exciting show exploring the social, political and economic issues related to water. The exhibition is open to all artists residing in California and national WCA members. Beginning in March, 2010, CAC will manage a new studio space in the Merchandise Mart, a location that welcomes more than three million visitors each year. CAC Around Town creates alternative exhibition opportunities for CAC Artist Members including pop up galleries, restaurants, office lobbies, cafes and more. By joining CAC, artists are eligible to participate in Around Town where they can attract new and diverse audiences.

Last Call for Peace Postcards!

Over the last two months I have been curating postcards that speak out against nuclear weapons and advocate for peace. These postcards, documented onhttp://wcaartwavesinternational.blogspot.com/, will be exhibited at the United Nations Mexico City conference from September 9-11. I will also discuss this postcard project at a conference workshop. The premise of this project is that civil society all around the world can speak out about social justice through art. Hand-made postcards are perfect vehicles for delivering such messages openly and succinctly.

For those who have created and mailed a postcard to me, thank you from the bottom of my heart. For those who haven’t made a card yet, there is still time. The deadline is September 1, but I will continue to accept cards until I leave for Mexico City. So far, 131 cards have been collected – I would love to reach or exceed my personal goal of 300 cards. It would be wonderful to demonstrate the power of the simple postcard.

Artists converge at 2ndannual Art Jam

A week of creativity culminates in exhibition at The Galaxie

The Galaxie opens the entirety of its beautifully designed 11,000-square-foot collection of studios to Chicago and tri-state-area artists who are accepted to take part in a week-long residency that winds up with an exhibition and sale of their newly created works.

Art Jam is set for Saturday, August 22 through Friday August 28, at The Galaxie, 2603 West Barry, Chicago.

The week-long residency will feature an artist-juried exhibition of works completed during the week on Friday, August 28, from 7 - 11 p.m.

This integrated experience will provide 40 artists with the chance to work on-site in the same place simultaneously, gain experience, inspiration and to meet fellow artists, all while benefiting from open access to studio space.

All visual artists are invited to submit applications for this residency program by August 15th to meet the deadline. The program is open to, but not limited to sculptors, ceramicists, photographers, filmmakers, street artists, muralists, painters and print makers.

Produced by Sarah Jessica Parker, among others, will bring together 13 aspiring artists and challenge them to create pieces in a range of disciplines including sculpture, painting, photography, industrial design. The winner will get a cash prize and a national tour. Casting call, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., July 16 at the School of the Art Institute's Sullivan Galleries, 33 S. State St.

Artist’s application is very long, very personal, includes a passport number and requires the usual CV, CD with 20 or more images of works, prints of the works represented on the CD, none of which are returned to the artist, and an original work of art. You must also be available to travel during three weeks in Sept and in then again in the spring. All of this is due next week. Sounds like fun...........

Since we want to be sure everyone is fully informed, we are answering your FAQ's and giving you an extra week to register.

RAW FAQ's

Q. Will you provide space for me if I don't have a studio in Ravenswood?

A. Absolutely! We will locate a space in the corridor for your art/performance/etc

Q. How much space do I get for $35?

A. Last year the spaces were an average of 15-20 linear feet for artists that needed wall space. The performance spaces and installation spaces were based on the needs of the artists and varied.

Q. I have a business in Ravenswood and want to showcase my business, how do I register?

A. On the registration form you can select business and put the name of your business as the listing.

Q. I do more than just one of the options (for example: painting and music) but the application makes me choose only one. How do I let you know I do both?

A. At the bottom of the application is a place where you can add additional comments. In this space, please indicate what your needs are and will contact you later this month to make any necessary accommodations.

Q. I am in a band and we walk to perform at ArtWalk. How much do you pay?

A. We do not pay any artists to be in the Ravenswood ArtWalk. All artists, whether they are painters, dancers, poets, filmmakers and yes, even bands pay RAW $35 for inclusion in our event. If you are a band, please mark musical performance on your application. We will contact you about scheduling the performance area that is best for your musical act.

Q. I am in a group of artists and we want to exhibit together. Can we all exhibit for $35?

A. No. Each artist must pay the $35 application fee. Have each artist indicate the group name on the application form and we will ensure that everyone in the group is located in one building. When we print the map, each artist's name will be listed under the group name.

Q. I am a returning artist and loved my space last year. How can I be sure to get the same space again?

A. Just write a note in the additional comment area at the bottom of the application and we will do our best to honor your request.

Q. Is the $35 fee an application for a jury show?

A. No. $35 is the only fee. RAW is not a juried show. RAW's mission is to bring awareness of the artists that live and work in the Ravenswood Corridor. Your payment of $35 ensures your inclusion in this year's event and supports our mission.

Q. What do I get for my $35 registration fee?

A. Exhibition space, Web presence on our website and a link to your website, Your name on printed map (10,000 impressions), 50 maps for distribution, 50 postcards for distribution, 10 posters, invitation to opening reception.

Q. Do I have to pay by PayPal?

"ADA Era For Change" will take place July 15, at the James R. Thompson Center, 100 West Randolph Street, in Chicago.

St. Louis Chapter of the Women's Caucus for Art regional 'fiber' art exhibit, Made by Hand

The St. Louis Chapter of the Women's Caucus for art is gearing up for a regional 'fiber' art exhibition.

For the first time, the WCA chapter will be participating in Innovations in Textiles 8. IT8 is a biennial collaborative event in St. Louis that investigates the state of contemporary fiber/textile arts. Nineteen nonprofit and private arts organizations join forces to present exhibitions related to fiber art created by national and international artists. Activities include workshops, lectures, gallery tours, and community programs.

As part of IT8, WCA-STL presents Made by Hand, a regional exhibition juried by fiber artist Jo Stealey.

Stealey is an art professor and head of the fiber department at the University of Missouri - Columbia. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally; and is in several permanent collections. Stealey explores aspects of drawing, writing, sculpting, and assembling, all through her expansive use of handmade paper. She states, "I am searching for a visceral response that touches a place within us where no words exist to describe our emotion." Naturally occurring shapes and structures inspire Stealey's works.

The exhibition will be held at Crossroads Art Studios and Gallery 501 N. Kingshighway, St. Charles MO 63301. The exhibition will be on display Sept 8 - October 8, 2009 with a reception: Friday Sept 11, 7-9pm. It will also be part of the IT8 bus tour: Saturday, October 3.
